Not Resolutions. Goals

I have all sorts of goals for this year. I would like to get the kids and me all healthy so that I can get my butt back to the gym. It's not like I had been going all that long or often for that matter. But when I did go I felt amazing. And the way my brain has been lately I am about ready to try anything.
I need to get back into the woods more. I am at such peace in the trees especial the Gorge. It is my happy place and I am too far from it here in Salem.
More time with my mom. She needs the break as much as I do. So if we run away together we both get a time out.
Catch up on my blog. I have a good start going I just need to keep it up. It's just all the back blogging that is slowing me down.
Blogs for the kids. Not Blogs so much as online diaries. Once a week we will set down and talk about what they are thinking and what the best parts of their week was. My hope is at the end of the year I can have their thoughts made into a book that they can have to keep forever. And with the help of my dear sister I got that started this morning.
I would like to find some sort of balance between kids and housework. Other moms don't need housekeepers why do I.....not that I have had one in 6 months.

It's been the day......no week from hell.
#1 I know that going back to school after being out for 2 weeks does something to kids, I do. But this week has been so hard for everyone in the house. Seriously they have all gone crazy.
#2 Jackson and I are over our colds, but now the girls and Jeff have colds.
#3 Because of said cold Ainsley barfed in the check out at WinCo today.
#4 Trying to get the house back in order (not that it ever is in any sense of the word) after a holiday, vacation, party, over night company or illness takes forever. But to have all of these things and all three kids out off school makes it impossible.
Oh!!! #5 My kids saying a bad word when the neighbor girls were at the door. That was awesome. It wasn't so much saying a bad word but Jackson whispering to the baby "say *#@*#" and then Ainsley saying "we're trying to get her to say *#@*#". They got sent to bed.
That was a proud parenting moment let me tell you. All of that and it's only Wednesday.
I have called Jeff every day with my unhappiness. So today without being asked he came home with groceries so I don't have to go out tomorrow and my two favorite candies.
See he is a good man.

Just as soon as the Bergs got there we went over to the Huckleberry Inn for our New Year's Day breakfast. One of the best thing about coming up here is all the food traditions. We always start our trip with lunch at Calamity Jane's on our way in for their burgers and chilly fries. I am fond of the Canadian bacon pizza burger myself. The next day it's breakfast at the Huckleberry Inn with their amazing donuts. Then the last night we always go to the ZigZag Inn for Italian food. Pizza for the kids and mouth watering chicken raveole for me.

This is what I'm talking about when I say amazing donuts.

Starting a fire out in the snow was something new this year. I don't know why we never did it before.
It was cozy and as long as we were outside the kids didn't think they needed to come in and out of the house 100 times.

After sledding we went for a drive in the snow. We saw this giant porch swing and had to get a picture of the kids on it.
There was enough snow to make everything look so pretty, but not enough to keep us from driving all over the mountain.

We found this whole cliff covered in ice. The boys had to go check it out.

Now it was time to start back home. Just in time to get a good night's sleep so we can go back to school and work in the morning.

As we do every year we headed up the mountain for some fun in the snow on new years eve.
The kids love this tradition so much that they ask us all year
"when are we going to the the cabin with our cousins?"
This year however our cousins would not be joining us until New Years Day. We still had just as much fun as ever.

I wish I had taken some other pictures of our Christmas eve festivities ,but I didn't and this is all I have. Just My cat enjoying the silent night after the kids were asleep.

This year was the same as every year we are in town for Christmas we celebrated with Cindy and Lorin on Christmas Eve And as always it was lovely. The kids love the time we get with them and of course we have fun too.
But this year after we wrapped things up at the house we headed over to our friends house to go caroling - a first for our family. But I think we all had a good time... even Jeff. This may just have to become a new tradition.

McCumber Christmas

As you may know due to the intricate nature of our family we have Christmas on the 23th so that we can all be together and everyone can be with their other families on the 24th and 25th. This year since it would be the last year Kenzie would be living at home we had Christmas at the Bergs. It was wonder full as always.

Our baby brother Richard got home from his trip to Bali just in time for Christmas.

Boys and Girls Aid Gala of Trees

It was a virtual Christmas tree forest at the Salem Conference Center for the 2010 Boys and Girls Aid Gala of Trees. Not to be confused with the Boys and Girls "Club," Boys and Girls Aid helps children find safe and permanent homes. One of their most popular fundraisers of the year is the Gala of Trees.

Amazingly festive, the event put everyone in the holiday mood. After being properly oriented by Jennifer Kinkade, Lena Prine and Joanie Fohn, I went on to the lobby, which was filled with tabletop trees and wreaths for silent auction. I had my eye on "Bling Me Home for Christmas," a tree covered with shiny décor. It was decorated by Savanna Courtney and Sharon Hoffer and sponsored by Blackberries. I bid on a wreath designed by one of the Boys and Girls Aid Cherry Branch Auxiliary Presidents, AnnMarie DuFault, who shares the leadership job with Lisa Plechl-Phillips.

The banquet hall was surrounded by 13 majestic trees, waiting for auction. Each tree was sponsored by local businesses and decorated by the organization's supporters. One of the favorites was the "Star Wars"-themed tree, decorated by Leanna Thayer and sponsored by law firm Gatti, Gatti, Maier, Sayer, Thayer, Smith and Associates.

Firm members and spouses, Ryan Jennings, Heather Latham, Mike and Elizabeth Smith, and Leanna's husband, Jeff Thayer, showed me many of the tree's special features, which included a round, lit "death star" tree topper. Leanna said she spent hundreds of hours on the tree, but it paid off. The top bidder took it home for $5,000.

One of my favorite trees was "Days of December," sponsored by Performance Health Technology. I had a chance to visit with Holly Tindall and Amy Barnwell from the company. Sponsor Mountain West Investment Corporation was represented by Gayle Lundmark, who attended with cousin Jacqueline Denison. Sponsors Bud and Selma Pierce, and his organization, Hematology Oncology of Salem, made possible the "Polar Express" tree, which featured an authentic Lionel electric O-gauge train circling the base.

It was nice to learn about Boys and Girls Aid, founded in Portland in 1885. The group is one of Oregon's most established adoption agencies for both infants and children in foster care. Their work also includes creating safe places for homeless and runaway youth as well as helping young people who are transitioning into adulthood without family support or resources. Black Friday

After Thanksgiving dinner Kelly and I drove back to Salem to do some black Friday shopping. Boy did we have a blast. We started at Walmart as soon as we got into town at 4:30. After that we headed over to Toys-R-Us. It opened its doors at 10:30 and we got in and out by 10:45.
Nothing else was going to open until 3 or 4 so we decided it would be fun to go get warm and why not watch a movie while we were at it.

After the movie we met up with my friend Melody and her sisters. They were heading over to Kohl's so we decided to go with them and get the things we needed there.
I love Melody and miss having her here in town. However I love that her mom and dad live here so that she comes back every so often and we get to see her and the girls.

The ringleader

The streets were dark, the wind was whipping and the faint sound of a saxophone playing a Christmas tune could be heard in the distance.

Huddled in a semicircle outside the Salem Center Macy's at 3:30 a.m. were five sleep-deprived super shoppers waiting for the store to open at 4.

The ringleader, Leanna Thayer, was the Black Friday veteran, and coincidentally, she also was the most chipper of the Salem group.

Thayer coaxed her sister-in-law, Kelly Werner, into joining her on the Black Friday mission.
"She's the whole reason we're here," Werner said, pointing to Thayer.

The two, along with Thayer's friend Melody Thueson and Thueson's two teenage sisters, had been on the prowl for deals for about 10 hours.

They woke up Thanksgiving Day and never went back to sleep, hitting Wal-Mart, Toys R Us and Kohl's before Macy's.

Fueled by caffeine and unbeatable bargains, the team was showing signs of slowing down.
"Tired," came the spontaneous response when asked how they were feeling.

But specific items behind Macy's locked doors were enough to keep them in line.

Thayer and Werner had plans to purchase vacuums at half the regular price. They also were in search of jewelry and down comforters.

"It's just so much fun," Thayer said. "It's the experience. Shopping gives you a rush anyway, but shopping when you get great deals gives you even more of a rush."

I have an obsession with the fall. Always have. It's more than just school starting back up and football games. Its the colors and the smells and the way that some days are warm enough to wear short sleeved shirts but some are cold enough that you can wear a sweater.

I want to blog, I do. But it's just so hard to get the time and then how to get myself started.
It makes me sad to look back and so much time has gone by. But that's what happens you know.
I promise to do better for myself. I need to just start now and do catchup as I go.

We got up at 5:30am and headed up to Seaside to dig razor clams. Not anything that I have ever done before but I'll try anything once.

Ains and Emer got board with it so we went up and played in the dry sand where it was warm.

The kids named the cat prince so that's what we have be calling it for the last year. But if you ask me she's a princess

And seeing that she is going to have kittens any day now.......I'm thinking princess is a better name for her.

As you may know my Grammy has been living with my Mom and Dad for the last 6 years.
It's been such a great blessing to us grandkids that only got to see her 2 to 3 times a year when we growing up. We have LOVED having her here where we can see her anytime. She is always such a light. Just so happy to see us and the kids. She LOVES her grand and great grand kids. OH, and the babies she just can't get enough of the babies and the babies have all loved her just as much. I know this is all just for now and she will be coming home after Dads chemo is all over and he is back on his feet. But its been hard to not see her and is going to be even harder now that she is so fare away.

Knowing that she was going to be leaving on Wednesday The kids and I ran out to my mom's to see her Friday after school. The sun was shining it was the perfect day to be in the yard and enjoy watching the kids play.
This is My Grammy and our old dog. Elsa is 13 and Grammy is 97. I don't know how to count dog years but I thinking that it's same same.

Jackson just had to show Grandma his DSI.

And the girls played ball.

I know that Margie is going to take good care and love her every day for us. I am so happy that she can do this and take some of the stress off so that my Dad can get better and my mom can help him to do that. And we know that she is safe and we know that she is somewhere that she is loved. We'll miss you for now Grammy and we will be so happy when you come home.

We all know that I'mmmm dingy, scatter brained and an all around shinny penny type of girl. I try or at least I think I'm trying. But this time I think I was even able to astound myself with my airheadedness.
I knew I had to put together a poster board for the auction and just like me I was trying to throw it together the night before. I thought I was doing this quite successfully. Until I noticed that the glue didn't appear to be drying and was looking.........well greasy.
For whatever reason I took another look at the "glue stick" in my hand.

Imagine my surprise when I found it to be a stick of sunscreen. At least it was just the first 5 flowers and the glue was still able to stick with all that sunscreen in the way.

This is a picture of the the flowers. It's the tall ones that got SPF 50 applied to their backs.

And after all that, it turned out just fine. I had each child write what their favorite thing about making the painting was on the flowers and the clouds.

The aution went well. Our panting would have sold for $6o but Jeff had to try to bid it up so now we will be hanging it in the kids room at the coast. He also acquired a stick horse from the auction for his little Emmers and some books at the book fair for the big kids.
I forgot my camera so I have no pictures. But we all had a good time and it was fun to see all the other art that was for sale.

I was running late to pickup Jackson from school today and just let Ains wear the princess dress in the car that she had been wearing all day . When we arrived back at the house the big kids ran to the door while I was getting Emers out of the car. Just as I closed the car door and looked toward the house

Every Saturday Jeff makes sure that he is home and we spend the whole day together as a family.
This Saturday he decided that we needed to go to the Enchanted Forest.

After leaving the Enchanted Forest we were all pretty hungry so we headed over to one of Salem's better known dinning establishments Rock-N-Rogers. For some burgers, fries and shakes.

A fun field day makes for an early bed time. So we are all happy. I love Saturdays.

This is the box that some of the butterflies are flying out of on wires.

This is what I did in lieu of a frame.

It is just the same paper from the box pasted around the sides.

The sealant is so shiny that the pics that I took of it straight on are just a glare.

I love it and had such a good time helping the kids in making it.

What we have done so far

Every year the school has an art auction. Every class makes some thing or things to auction off to make money to support the art programs in the school. I didn't get to go last year but it sounded pretty cool.
This year for me it started with a phone call from my good friend Misty.
She informed me that Jackson's class did not have a parent helping with their project and was I interested in doing that, Oh and she would be happy to watch the girls for me.
Hmmmmmmmm!
Get some time away from the house, make Jackson happy and play with art stuff.
YES!!! PLEASE!! AND THANK YOU, MISTY!!!
I went to the school with some thoughts in my head not knowing if the teacher had any of her own. After chatting with her and finding out that she didn't have anything in mind and I could do whatever I like. I was so excited to get started.

So this is what we have so far. The first day we did the sky.

The second day the kids signed their names on the back and

water colored the butterflies.

I had gotten a call from the Shriners asking to donate some money and they sent us tickets to see their circus. My kids didn't know anything about it so this afternoon I said to them if you pull all the weeds in the front yard Daddy and I will take you to the circus. Boy did they pull those weeds.

This was the first act. It was a tight rope motorcycle trapeze combo.

and yes they spun all the way around.

Ainsley kept yelling WOW she IS fabulous.

This little dog is doing a head stand on its trainer's hand.

Jackson didn't say much the whole night.

That may be a bad thing, I see him doing all the things you're told not to try at home.

Once again Ains yelling Wow They are fantastic.
And Emery was dancing her little butt off. They did play some good club music.

So we have been getting mice in the house at the coast as long as........ Well always. Every spring the little buggers come in make a mess and make the house smells like a hamster cage. I hate it. So every year I go on a killing / cleaning spree. Last year Jeff had someone come in and re-duct the house with steel ducts with the hope that it would stop them from coming in. We were wrong. The last time we were at the house it smelled a little funny to me and this time it was the hamster cage all over again. I started looking around and found that they had been in our bed and all over the down comforter. So I started cleaning , setting traps and loaded up the linens to be dry-cleaned. Boy it's fun to have to do this every spring

Every odd year my kids get to have a party with their friends and every even year its just the family. The more kids I have the less stress of planing some big party for every one every year. I can't take any of the credit for this stroke of genius its what my sister Becky does with her fam and I just think its a great idea.
This year J wanted to go to the new Kroc Center and boy was it cool.

Thanks to Ashly for the cake. I just didn't have the time to do one of my master pieces this year.
And I do like what she did.

This year due to the fact that my dad is in the middle of his chemo and has no immune system we had our Easter at my sister Amy's house. It was not the same but the kids had fun, the weather was great and with the exception of my Mom, Dad and Grammy we were together.

All of the kids love Elsa. But Em's love has no compare. Let's put the fact that she thinks that she's a dog and eats and drinks out of Elsa's dish aside. This kid can not get enough of her dog. And I'm pretty sure the dog feels the same way.

The Last Weekend of Spring Break

I love spring out at the ranch, every where you look there is something in bloom.
The couple that owned the ranch last made sure of that.

Its not hard to fall in love with it all over again when this is what you see every where you look.

Papa Jack likes to surprise the kids with fun things that he thinks he is going to miss.

Like Easter!
So he got up early Saturday morning and planted Easter eggs all over the yard for the kids.

My sweet Em was really getting the hang of it this year.

Oh he was just a wild man and far too big to fall for the Easter bunny line Papa was feeding him.
J-Mom I know it was Papa that hid the eggs.
M-Why is that?
J-I saw the extra candy in the house and the Easter bunny doesn't hide the eggs....we do
M-Ok Jackson but don't ruin it for the little kids.
He is getting way to smart for me.

Boy she was so serious about finding just as many as her brother.

I love pictures with their Papa it always makes them look so small.

Js new old buddy. Two of the horses died last winter so this one that was all mean is now very nice and loves all the attention he is getting from the kids when we are there.

We started our day with a trip into Tillamook and the feed store.

Both the chick and the baby are saying "What is that!?!"

I know everyone is sick of hearing it but can you believe that this baby is 8 days younger than Emery. I think its the hair that makes her look so much older.

We went back to the ranch for lunch and some outside time.

After lunch we headed over to the dairy and helped feed the baby cows.

What a fun time for us to be able to have such great company. There is nothing better than some well deserved girl time. I need to do this more.

Spring Break

Every year Jackson's spring break starts the Thursday before due to parent/teacher conferences.
I decided that I would go ahead and take the kids out to the coast on Thursday. After making this decision I started to dread it.
I hate going to the coast alone.
I can't sleep.
My kids get all needy when its just me.
And its just no fun by myself .

So I asked some of the girls to come out with me and bring their kids. There was 10 of us all together, 3 moms and 7 kids ranging from 7 years to 11 months.
The first thing we did after being in the car for 2 hours and getting settled in was walk down to the river and get some of the wiggles out.

After a great afternoon on the beach we had chili for diner and put them all to bed.
Once the kids were all sleeping the moms went out and sat in the hot tub, drank sparkling cider and listened to the coyotes.

We must have looked like the parents of the year for about three to four weeks.

Emmrs took a header out of the hot tub and blacked her eye

Its not that bad now but it looked awful for about a week

And then Ains slipped in the bath.........You would think that all my kids would know better after what happened with J at the same age.

Then Emers whacked her face on a retaining wall. It looked way worse in person.

TThe same day that Ains walked into a hand rail and got the other eye.

I guess black eyes are better than broken bones.

We got up early and drove the Bergs to the airport and decided that since we were already on that side of town to just start our last day by taking in the strip. Unfortunately I left My camera at the Hotel. But Jeff did the best he could and that evening Beck and Austy met up with us and Beck was nice enough to take some pics for us with her camera.

Seriously spur of the moment trip to Vegas.
I called my sister one day last week and said, "I have been carrying around this temple recommend for almost a year. Can you go to the temple with me tomorrow?" And she said, "Why don't you just come to Vegas next week and go with us."
I told Jeff, he looked at his calender, rearranged some things and here we are.
Vegas for 3 days with no kids and my sisters who truly are my best friends.

I know! I know! Every year our husbands say never again and every year we manage to get one more year out of them. But this year there were no broken water mains, no shattered toilets, the cabin didn't fill with smoke and for the most part the spouses didn't threaten divorce.

So I'm going to call it a win and say that we should definitely do it again next year.

Part two of Christmas was the 24th with Jeff's mom and Loren. We had dessert and exchanged gifts. It is always a good time when Grandma and La La come over. The kids just love them especially when they bring gifts.

Best gift ever!! Jack's neighbor made this rocking horse and she LOVES it. But that's just the beginning. The wood that he used to make it was from Jeff's and my old bed's footboard. So instead of being burned or thrown into a landfill our old bed gets a second chance at life and what a great new life to have.

The McCumber's Christmas

We started the evening with dinner and some dessert. Everyone brought something. It's always a collaboration. That way, no one person has to do it all.

After dinner, but before the gifts, Mackenzie went into the living room and started reading a book and, before you knew it, all the kids were at her feet listening. Well, maybe not Jackson.

Jackson and Morgan glued to each other as always.

This is four generations, minus me. My Mom, My Dad's Mom and My Girl.

Oh, the matching pajamas. Our kids are going to hate this some day. But for now it is one of the funnest parts of Christmas for me. I just love seeing them all matchy matchy. And to think we almost didn't get little Mr. Grant to put his on. Funny little man didn't think that PJs were a good gift at all and was not about to put them on.
But as you can see we got him to do it and he even has on the biggest Smile.
Thanks to his daddy's belly of course.

OK. So I know that every parent thinks that their kids are the best at whatever they are doing. But my kids are the loudest and they know all the words.
Being loud may not always be a wonderful thing . But when they are singing it is. My kids are not mumbling through their lines. You can hear every word. Even if you are standing at the back of the gym.

Because of the snow storm last year I did not get the picture of the kids with Santa that I wanted.
So we went early this year. This is no "mall" Santa. We go to Jeff's ( My baby Daddy) office.
They set this thing up every year and it is spectacular.

Redecorating the Barbie Tree

I made Jackson suffer for a whole week of the pink wonder that was the Barbie tree before I decided to remove the Barbies and let the kids put our decorations on it.
In all honesty this was a first for us all. The kids have never decorated the tree. Not that I wouldn't have let them. But for the last 4 years we have gotten one from the Gala and haven't had to do that. The last time our family decorated a tree, Ainsley was 3 months old.
And now look at her - my big 4 year old.

Cookie Night

This is the night every year that we get together with the cousins at my Mom's house and the kids make cookies with Grandma for her neighbors.

I think this tradition started with Kaila but all the kids love this night.

Emery was helping clean up.

The red sprinkles were cinnamon and hot, but that didn't stop her one bit.

My kids and I had to go early because I was scared of what the weather was doing. So we missed the taking of the cookies to the neighbors and singing for them. But there is always next year.

The trees we brought home this year

This tree was a fluke. When the trees were delivered to be decorated there was one extra tree. So it was decorated and put out into the silent auction. I loved it so much that I was able to talk Jeff into getting it for me.

And Jeff, being the good Daddy that he is, had to get the Barbie tree for his girls.

And boy did they LOVE it.

The Gala of Trees

The one thing that Jeff and I do that is just for us at Christmas every year is go to The Gala of Trees that is put on as a fund raiser for the Boys and Girls Aid Society. We have done this every year for the last 6 years. We look forward to it so much - Me for the dressing up and dancing, Jeff for all the good food.

I forget the name of this one. But I just loved the colors and all the pretty things it came with.

It was as much fun as ever and I'm already looking forward to next year.

We took off Friday after Jeff got home from work and drove out to Detroit Lake to get one last camping trip in before winter traps us in for the next 5 to 6 months.

Breakfast Saturday morning.

The water was so low that you had to walk about a quarter of a mile to get to it. Where the kids are standing is under water in the summer.

I think we need to just feed the dog inside from now on.

The vine maples were on fire with fall leaves and we all thought the ones in the lava beds were just awesome. It looks like the ancient lava flow is erupting.

I had been asking Jeff what he would like to do for his birthday and he had nothing for me to work with for days. But on Thursday he got up and said, "You know what, I want to go camping."
Camping! Good we can do that. I'll see if we can get in somewhere.
So that's how we wound up finding Beverly Beach. It was gorgeous and we are definitely going back there again.

While we were eating these little buggers showed up. They drug the dog's food dish under the trailer and were not about to leave. After much effort we were able to shoo them off and we tossed the remaining food into the bushes.

After we got the kids and Jeff's dad to sleep, we went on a walk around the camp ground. Just as we got over by the restrooms I heard some rustling in the skunk cabbage. Just as Jeff was giving me a hard time for hearing things this critter stepped out onto the trail just in front of us.
And Yes that is a Beaver.
The pictures aren't that great because I didn't want to scare him.

I don't think he's going to like this one but I just wanted to show you what the kids got Jeff for his birthday. Ah, yes, and those would be cookie pants.

OK. So this was a mystery for all of us.
So we're walking along and we see these strange marks not in but on the top of the sand. Weird right? I say to Jackson that it looks just like if there had been a light saber battle on the beach.

Of course my little man goes with that and thoroughly examines the marks. But in the end the boy from the coast shows us that it's just some bugs that have kicked the sand out of their holes. So much for possibly running into Jedi on the beach.

Ancient Stump
Back to the dawn of the bronze age! This root mass was one of many buried beneath the beaches along the Oregon Coast between Newport and Neskowin. It once supported a spruce tree, which was buried when the land suddenly dropped into the sea. It remained preserved beneath the sand for 4,100 years before surfacing and breaking free in 1998. Violent winter storms washed it into the mouth of Spencer Creek in 1999.

You know those moments where you just want to freeze time because everything is just so perfect. Everyone is geting along and having the time of their life. This was one of those.
It was just like Heaven.

Our boat has been in the shop since July and it has just one more thing that needed to be done. This required that I go to Newport to get a part and then drive that part to Garibaldi to the repair shop.
So, the girls and I made a day, or should I say two days, of it.

We went to the coast for the weekend and were so happy when Jenn and Ash came to spend the afternoon with us. It turned what would have otherwise been us siting around the house all day into a day at the beach.

The great tree. Our Bully

My childhood was spent playing in the shadow of a Giant. A great monster of a tree (We called it the bully) that is in the background of almost every picture ever taken in my parents’ backyard.
You could see it from blocks away and it inspired the most wonderful adventures in our very own Neverland. Truly the place where dreams are made and children never grow up. We were and are blest to have such a wonderful place to call our home and where we are able to watch our kids enjoy the same happy adventures together.
But such is life and everything has its end. The tree’s great branches have failed... now for the last time. It is truly the end of an era. Our Giant will be gone and he will be missed by all.

Ainsley started her Birthday at the Fruit Stand having some lunch with her Papa Jack and Grandma Lance.

Anytime we go to the fruit stand, we need at least 50 cents for some horsey rides.
